Details: Umierov stated that "over two days, Special Envoy for Peace Steve Witkoff and [Trump's son-in-law] Jared Kushner met with Ukrainian Secretary of National Security and Defence Council Rustem Umierov and Chief of General Staff General Andrii Hnatov for constructive discussions on advancing a credible pathway toward a durable and just peace in Ukraine".
Friday marked the sixth meeting between the sides in the past two weeks.
Quote from Umierov: "Secretary Umierov reaffirmed that Ukraine's priority is securing a settlement that protects its independence and sovereignty, ensures the safety of Ukrainians, and provides a stable foundation for a prosperous democratic future."
Details: The post also stated that the participants had discussed the outcome of the recent meeting between the US and Russian sides and steps that could lead to ending the war.
Quote from Umierov: "The American and Ukrainian [delegations] also agreed on the framework of security arrangements and discussed necessary deterrence capabilities to sustain a lasting peace. Both parties agreed that real progress toward any agreement depends on Russia's readiness to show serious commitment to long-term peace, including steps toward de-escalation and cessation of killings."
Details: Umeirov said the future prosperity agenda, which aims to support Ukraine's reconstruction process after the war, joint economic initiatives of the US and Ukraine and long-term recovery projects, had also been discussed separately.
Quote from Umierov: "American and Ukrainian parties underscored that an end to the war and credible steps toward ceasefire and de-escalation are necessary to prevent renewed aggression and to enable Ukraine's comprehensive redevelopment plan, designed to make the nation stronger and more prosperous than before the war."
Details: Umierov added that the sides will meet again on Saturday to continue the talks.
Updated: Witkoff also wrote on X (Twitter) about the course of the talks between the Ukrainian and US delegations. He noted that participants had discussed the results of the recent meeting between the US side and the Russians as well as steps that could lead to ending this war. The Americans and Ukrainians also agreed on the framework of security arrangements and discussed the necessary deterrence measures to maintain lasting peace.
Quote from Witkoff: "Both parties agreed that real progress toward any agreement depends on Russia's readiness to show serious commitment to long-term peace, including steps toward de-escalation and cessation of killings."
Details: Witkoff also stated that the Ukrainian and American sides "will reconvene tomorrow to continue advancing the discussions".
Previously: It was reported that Umierov and Hnatov were to hold another meeting in Miami with Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Before that, media reported that a meeting between Ukrainian and US delegations had concluded.
Background:
- Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed to journalists in Brussels that the Ukrainian delegation had received an invitation to the US. He also noted that Kyiv had not yet received detailed information about the content of the US-Russia talks that took place on Monday 1 December in the Kremlin, stressing that there were understandable reasons for this.
- Earlier, there were media reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy might meet with Witkoff and Kushner in Europe on Wednesday 3 December, but those plans were cancelled.
- Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov said that after talks with representatives of Trump's team no compromise version of a plan to end the war in Ukraine has been found so far.
- Meanwhile, intelligence available to NATO has not indicated that Putin is ready for a peace agreement. The Alliance is convinced that the Kremlin leader's statements about Russia being prepared to wage war against European countries are merely bluff.
