Sentencing for driver convicted in crash that killed mother and daughter

ST. LOUIS -- Monte Henderson is set to be sentenced this morning for the deaths of Lety Bracero and her daughter Alyssa Cordova, who were hit and killed by Henderson's car in downtown St. Louis last year.

The sentencing will take place at the Civil Courts building in St. Louis at 10 a.m. Henderson, 23, pled guilty in July to two counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of armed criminal action. The tragic incident occurred early on Valentine's Day morning last year when Henderson, driving drunk and speeding, ran red lights and struck Bracero and Cordova.

"Our family is just heartbroken. It's just like a hole. There's not only one person missing, there's two," said Alice Bracero, a family member. "They're not here to celebrate birthdays. They're not here to celebrate holidays."

Lety Bracero, 42, and her daughter Alyssa Cordova, 21, were returning to their hotel after attending a concert when they were fatally struck at the intersection of 18th and Olive, close to city police headquarters.

Prosecutors have stated that Henderson was under the influence of alcohol and was speeding at the time of the crash. The charges he faces could result in a prison sentence ranging from six to 50 years.

Family and friends of the victims expressed their grief and the void left by the loss of Bracero and Cordova. "Alyssa's phone calls in the night when she's doing homework... there's none of that," Alice Bracero shared, highlighting the deep impact of their absence.
