Russia attacked two foreign-flagged civilian cargo ships in the Black Sea, killing a sailor and wounding others, according to the Ukrainian vice PM and regional authorities. The vessels were leaving Ukrainian ports when the drones struck on 19 June. Ukrainian officials condemned it as part of Russia's wider assault on Black Sea shipping and global food security.
A civilian sailor killed at sea
Russian aerial drones hit the two civilian vessels on 19 June, killing one crew member and wounding five, the head of the Odesa Oblast Military Administration, Oleh Kiper, reported. A sailor on a Panama-flagged ship was killed, and two more crew members were wounded, one of them seriously. Three sailors on a vessel flying the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis suffered light injuries. The ships were heading out of port when the attack came.
They have since resumed their voyages, and the ports keep working with the security situation in mind, Kiper added.
Ukraine calls it terrorism
Oleksii Kuleba, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration, said the strike is fresh proof that Russia wages war on freedom of navigation, trade, and food security. Civilian crews, merchant ships, and the infrastructure behind humanitarian and export routes are all targets, he said. Such crimes deserve a clear international assessment, terrorism, he added.
"The world cannot get used to civilian sailors becoming a target for Russian weapons," Kuleba said.
Russia aims to complicate Ukrainian logistics and cut the country off from the sea. That pressure can weaken Ukraine both economically and militarily. Ukraine is one of the world's top grain exporters. Russian strikes on port infrastructure and foreign ships undermine the stability of those shipments. That can affect prices and the availability of food in countries that rely on Ukrainian exports.
Russian attacks on civilian shipping
Russia has repeatedly hit merchant traffic in the corridor.
- Overnight on 18 May, a Russian Shahed drone struck a Chinese ship, just before Putin's visit to Beijing.
- On 29 May, Russian drones hit three more foreign-flagged ships in the same corridor.
- On 8 June, Russia attacked two Maritime Search and Rescue Service boats on a humanitarian mission, leaving casualties.
