(FOX 5/KUSI) — One child died and another two were injured after they were struck by a vehicle in the San Carlos area of San Diego on Monday morning.

San Diego Police said they received a call around 7:22 a.m. reporting the crash near Lake Badin Avenue and Jackson Drive.

According to Captain Jonathan Lowe of the Eastern Division, two girls and one boy, all 12 years of age, were walking to Pershing Middle School just before 7:30 a.m. At least two of the children were siblings.

As the three were crossing Jackson Drive, a vehicle driving eastbound hit them at the intersection, according to Cpt. Lowe. Two of the children had major injuries, while the third had no obvious injuries. All three were transported to Rady Children's Hospital.

The boy reportedly succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital.

According to Cpt. Lowe, the driver, described as a man in his thirties, stayed at the scene and tried to render aid while waiting for paramedics. Alcohol and drugs to not appear to be a factor.

Police are interviewing witnesses and have notified the family members of the children.

“It’s my understanding that a lot of children do cross this intersection, there isn’t a marked crosswalk, but it is a normal intersection,” Cpt. Lowe said.
