Quote: "...confirmed was the fact that certain individuals hold Russian citizenship – relevant decisions regarding them have been prepared. I have signed the decree."

Details: The decree does not specify who is affected. Ukrainska Pravda is seeking comment from the Office of the President.

Update: It was reported during the national joint 24/7 newscast, citing "a source within the government", that the decree concerns Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov, former MP from the pro-Russian Opposition Platform – For Life party Oleh Tsarov, and ballet dancer Serhii Polunin.

Background:

  • In less than 24 hours, a petition calling on the president to revoke the Ukrainian citizenship of Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov has gathered the 25,000 signatures required for the petition to be considered by the president.
  • The petition's author, Myroslav Otkovych, argued that journalists had repeatedly published materials suggesting Trukhanov might hold Russian citizenship.
  • Trukhanov has categorically denied possessing a Russian passport.
  • Ukrainian activist Serhii Sternenko was attacked three times in 2018. During the last assault, he fatally wounded one of his assailants, Ivan Kuznetsov. The activist accused Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov of ordering the attacks, though Trukhanov did not comment on the allegation.
