Zelenskyy on London meeting: We discussed Trump's "peace plan" and security guarantees for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that during the 8 December meeting in London with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, they coordinated a joint diplomatic approach with the US, discussed security guarantees for Ukraine, post-war reconstruction and further defence support.

Details: Zelenskyy thanked Starmer, Macron and Merz for organising the meeting and "for each of their personal contributions on the path towards achieving peace".

Quote: "What is crucial today is unity between Europe and Ukraine, as well as unity between Europe, Ukraine and the United States.

Today, we held a detailed discussion on our joint diplomatic work with the American side, aligned a shared position on the importance of security guarantees and reconstruction and agreed on the next steps. We also held a separate discussion on further defence support for Ukraine.

I am grateful to the leaders for their willingness to stand with our people and help us on the path toward bringing peace closer."

Background:

• The leaders' meeting took place at 10 Downing Street. Afterwards, Starmer also held a separate conversation with Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian president then travelled to Brussels, where he is scheduled to meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and the EU leadership later the same day.
• The Élysée Palace confirmed that the central topics discussed by the UK, French, German and Ukrainian leaders in London were Trump's "peace plan" and security guarantees for Ukraine.
• Merz stated after the talks that support for Ukraine "will not falter".
• Ahead of the meeting, Macron said that Ukraine and Europe "have many cards" in the peace negotiations.
