MAPLEWOOD, Mo. - Sandy Grace has difficulties in breathing.

Grace, a disabled Air Force Veteran, has severe asthma and allergies. She says the recent smell in her apartment has made it even more difficult to inhale.

“It's fecal matter and urine, and my apartment smells like an open diaper. It's the only way I can explain it,” Grace said.

Sandy believes the source of the stench is the liquid dripping from a broken pipe above her bathroom at the Pepper Tree apartments in Maplewood.

“About two months ago, it started puffing, and then it nippled, and it started dripping out,” Grace said.

Sandy showed Contact 2 the maintenance requests she made to the property manager on the complex’s online portal.

The first request was on July 12 and the second was on July 21. Grace says a new owner bought the building last month and fears her concerns are not being taken seriously.

“You were my last hope, because I've done everything properly, you know. I'm retired from the Postal Service. I'm ex-military. I was a librarian here in Maplewood. I've done everything right in my life. You're paying your rent, you're doing everything right and you were the only last hope that I had,” Grace said.

After Contact 2 met with Sandy, we spoke to the building’s new owner. The owner told FOX 2 he’d already had a plumber assess the situation, but the crew couldn’t get into the unit above Sandy’s to work on the problem last week.

He assured Contact 2 the issue would be addressed quickly, and it was.

“As soon as you called, as soon as you came out to talk with me, now they’re everywhere. You lit that fire. You got things going,” Grace said.

When Contact 2 returned to the complex two days later, we saw plumbers entering Sandy’s apartment.

The leaky pipe was replaced that day.

“Contact 2 has been—don’t make me cry. You’ve been a godsend. You don’t know. Within not even a whole day, everything started to change. It’s just amazing. It’s a blessing and I thank you. You don’t know how much I thank you,” Grace said.

Now, Sandy can breathe easier after another rewarding resolution for Contact 2.
