'Workers Over Billionaires' protests break out across San Diego County
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A handful of planned protests were scheduled to take place in different San Diego communities and neighboring cities over the Labor Day holiday.
The protests, titled "Workers Over Billionaires," were expected to happen in downtown San Diego, Mira Mesa, Rancho Bernardo and La Jolla as well as the cities of Carlsbad, Chula Vista and Escondido.
"This Labor Day, we will continue to stand strong, fighting for public schools over private profits, healthcare over hedge funds, shared prosperity over corporate politics," a description for the event in Mira Mesa stated.
People gathered at 10 a.m. at the corner of Mira Mesa Boulevard and Westview Parkway with signs demanding an end to certain steps taken by the Trump administration, including an increase in federal immigration enforcement actions.
They held up signs with messages such as "I support indivisible federal workers," "Democracy belongs to the USA" and "Hands Off Our Government."
Similar protests were scheduled at Waterfront Park in downtown San Diego, Pearl Street and Girard Avenue in La Jolla, Rancho Bernardo Road and Bernardo Center Drive in Rancho Bernardo, Birch Road and Millenia Avenue in Chula Vista, Carlsbad Boulevard and Pine Avenue in Carlsbad and outside of the city hall building in Escondido.
The "Workers Over Billionaires" protests were part of a nationwide movement drawing crowds against the Trump administration on Labor Day.
