Woman hospitalized after being shot by officer on I-70
ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - A woman was hospitalized early Tuesday morning after being shot by a police officer on Interstate 70 in Earth City.
According to the St. Louis County Police Department, the incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on eastbound I-70, near the Blanchette Bridge.
The incident started after police received a call for a woman, who was believed to be a threat to herself, walking on the highway with a gun. At some point, police say the woman pointed a gun at one of the responding officers, prompting the officer to fire his weapon and grazing the woman with a shot.
The woman was taken in custody after the shooting and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, police said. A gun was recovered from the scene.
No officers were injured during the shooting. According to police, the officer who fired at the woman is a 28 year old man and has five years of law enforcement experience.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Eastbound I-70 was shut down for an extended period of time after the shooting. The highway has since been reopened.
