Woman fatally shot in Carlsbad; suspect killed in police shooting in Laguna Hills

CARLSBAD, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A homicide investigation is underway in Carlsbad after a woman was fatally shot Friday night in the parking lot of a local apartment complex, authorities confirmed.

According to the Carlsbad Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire around 9:53 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19 in the 2300 block of Rising Glen Way. When officers arrived, they found an adult woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite efforts by first responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the victim’s vehicle was stolen during the incident. The Laguna Beach Police Department received a notification from a license plate reader at 12:18 p.m. Saturday that the vehicle was entering Laguna Hills at El Toro Road and Laguna Canyon Road, the Orange County Sheriff's Department reports.

Officers with the Newport Beach Police Department spotted the stolen vehicle near Newport Coast and Pacific Coast Highway at 12:55 a.m. and tried to pull over the vehicle, according to the sheriff's department.

A pursuit began and went onto Interstate 5 south, and ended in an officer-involved shooting on El Toro Road when the sheriff's department says the suspect stopped his vehicle in the middle of the street, just south of Avenida De La Carlota, and got out of the vehicle before firing at approaching police vehicles. Multiple officers returned gunfire.

The suspect then continued to fire at officers while running toward the parking lot of the In-N-Out on Avenida de La Carlota. The suspect was hit by gunfire and fell to the ground while continuing to fire at officers, the sheriff's department reports.

The driver, identified as a person of interest in the homicide case, was given medical attention by officers and was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department identified the suspect on social media Saturday night as Andre Anthony Matijasevic, 31, of Rancho Santa Margarita.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Authorities believe the incident was isolated and say there is no ongoing threat to the Carlsbad community. The name of the victim has not yet been released pending family notification, and the investigation remains active.

The sheriff's department says the relationship between the victim and suspect is not known at this time.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department Homicide Unit and Orange County District Attorney’s Office are investigating.
