What is your favorite St. Louis mascot? FOX 2 viewers weigh in
When it comes to mascots, St. Louis fans have no shortage of favorites and plenty of opinions. A recent FOX 2 Facebook question had a variety of responses, but two mascots clearly outshined the rest: Fredbird and Louie.
The Cardinals’ red-feathered hype man has been an icon at Busch Stadium since 1979, and people didn’t hesitate to crown him the city’s top mascot. “Fredbird of course!” one fan wrote. Another said, “Fredbird forever!!” so it’s clear that the loyalty runs deep, with dozens repeating similar sentiments.
Not far behind was Louie, the blue polar bear who’s been rallying Blues fans since 2007. For many, he’s more than a mascot, with one commenter saying they named their dog after him.
A handful of other names popped up as well. Billiken, the good-luck charm of Saint Louis University, made a few appearances, along with nostalgic nods to long-time personalities like the St. Louis Blues’ towel man and Ray Wilkins, Busch Stadium’s iconic beer vendor.
The comments also brought some St. Louis humor as well. One person nominated “a clapped-out Altima with expired temp tags,” while another suggested “the Des Peres pickle jar.”
In the end, St. Louis mascots are more than just background characters on the sidelines, they’re a clear part of the city’s culture, memories, and humor. Whether it’s Fredbird tossing T-shirts, Louie pumping up the crowd, or a joke about temp tags becoming the city’s unofficial emblem, the mascots say a lot about what it means to be from this city.
