What are the best school districts in San Diego County?

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- One local school district has achieved recognition as the best in all of San Diego County and the third-best in California, according to Niche’s recently released 2026 Best Schools and Districts rankings.

The rankings, which evaluated over 11,000 school districts nationwide, spotlighted San Dieguito Union High School District as a standout among 42 public districts in the region and over 900 across the state.

Niche awarded the San Dieguito Union High School District an impressive overall grade of A+. The district excelled in several specific categories, receiving top marks in academics (A+), teachers (A+), college prep (A+), clubs and activities (A), sports (A), administration (A), as well as resources and facilities (A-). However, the school district received a B- grading from Niche for food and a B+ in diversity.

With a student body of 12,364 enrolled in grades 7-12 and a student-teacher ratio of 24 to 1, the district has shown academic performance, with 66% of students achieving proficiency in math and 77% in reading, based on state test scores. The district’s positive feedback from students, parents and teachers also supported the schools reputation.

According to researchers at Niche, the rankings consider a blend of qualitative and quantitative data, incorporating insights from students, alumni and parents alongside statistical measures from sources like the U.S. Department of Education. Specifically, ranking factors include state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, teacher quality, public school district ratings, among other things.

New this year: SAT/ACT scores were not considered for 2026 rankings to "reflect a general de-emphasis on test scores in the college admissions process."

Among the other top districts in San Diego County — Poway Unified (No. 2), Carlsbad Unified School District (No. 3) and Coronado Unified (No. 4) — also received A+ ratings. A full list of the top 15 districts in the county can be found below:
