According to the Carlsbad Police Department, the situation unfolded around 12:45 a.m. on June 19, when officers were patrolling the 300 block of Grand Avenue. Law enforcement came across a physical altercation between multiple people that quickly escalated into violence.
During the fight, three male victims suffered stab wounds inflicted by a Hispanic male suspect. One victim suffered a stab wound to the abdomen, another was stabbed in the back, while the third victim received multiple stab wounds to his torso and head, police said.
All three victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.
Detectives with the Crimes of Violence Unit investigated the assault throughout June and July, eventually identifying 26-year-old Cesar Cervantes as the prime suspect. On July 3, a search warrant was served at his residence in Vista.
Police said Cervantes was taken into custody and booked into jail on suspicion of the following charges: assault with a deadly weapon, mayhem and participating in a criminal street gang.
"The Carlsbad Police Department remains committed to thoroughly investigating violent crimes and ensuring the safety of our community," a spokesperson for the department stated in a press release detailing the matter.
Court proceedings are pending.
