US wants to end waivers on Russian oil sanctions as soon as possible, Rubio says

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said the country would like to lift exemptions on oil sanctions against Russia in the near future.

Source: Rubio, speaking before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on 2 June, as reported by European Pravda

Details: Jeanne Shaheen, the committee's top Democrat, questioned Rubio on whether the US will extend the waiver on sanctions against Russian oil.

Rubio said the final decision will be made by the US Treasury Department, "but I will tell you, it depends on the circumstances at the time".

Quote from Rubio: "We would like to end it as soon as we possibly can, because the underlying policy of this country has been to sanction their oil. These are time limited waivers for the purpose of opening up more global supply."

Background:

  • In May, the US announced a temporary extension of sanctions relief for Russian oil already at sea in order to ease the rise in global prices.
  • The measure is a temporary waiver of sanctions on Russian oil already at sea. The US first introduced the exemption on 12 March in an attempt to ease oil supply shortages and address high prices caused by Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, criticised the US decision to extend the waiver on sanctions related to the sale of Russian oil.
