US plans to accelerate troop withdrawal from Europe

The United States is planning to speed up the withdrawal of its troops from bases in Europe and is expected to present the relevant proposals to NATO allies as early as June.

Details: According to the source, the US intends to present its plans to allies during the NATO Force Sourcing Conference. Welt am Sonntag does not provide specific details on how much the process will be accelerated or which deployment locations will be affected.

In May, Washington already announced plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany. The move has been linked to disagreements between President Donald Trump and European leaders over policy towards Iran. The Pentagon estimated that the withdrawal process would take between six and 12 months.

Around 35,000 US service personnel are currently stationed in Germany, making it the largest US military contingent in Europe.

Trump has also indicated that he may reduce the number of US troops stationed in Spain and Italy.
