Ukrainian nuclear power plants reduce capacity due to Russian attacks

Ukrainian nuclear power plants have been forced to reduce their generating output due to a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure on the night of 5-6 December.

Quote: "The increase in output of nuclear power plants back to design capacity will occur gradually, once power engineers fix the grid areas damaged by the enemy strike."

Details: Ukraine's Ministry of Energy said repair work has begun.

Quote from the Energy Ministry: "The international community must not ignore Russia's gross violations of nuclear safety rules through its attacks on energy infrastructure that supports internal power supply and nuclear plant output.

Russia's policy of energy terrorism must be stopped."

Background:

  • IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi reported that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant temporarily lost all external power overnight – the first such incident since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.
  • Following the large-scale strike on 6 December, the volume of projected power consumption restrictions has had to be increased.
  • The protective confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, constructed to contain radioactive materials from the 1986 disaster, can no longer perform its primary safety function due to damage caused by a Russian drone strike.
