UK foreign secretary: Putin cannot veto deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has stated that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has no veto power over the potential deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine.

Source: Sky News, as reported by European Pravda

Details: Lammy emphasised that Putin must accept the proposal of ceasefire in Russia's war against Ukraine.

Quote: "That is the plan on the table, let's get on with it, what are we waiting for? What we certainly can't do is give Putin a veto over the security architecture that will govern that peace."

More details: Putin has rejected the possibility of NATO or other Western troops being stationed in Ukraine as part of any peace agreement.

Background:

  • Previously, French President Emmanuel Macron also stated that Russia would have no say in the deployment of foreign forces.
  • Reports indicate that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer outlined plans for a Western peacekeeping force in Ukraine at the coalition of the willing meeting on 15 March, with a proposed deployment of over 10,000 troops.
  • At the same time, Starmer noted that any post-ceasefire plans for Ukraine will require coordination with the United States.
