Details: Answering a question from the press about the commitments he had made in July to European partners regarding participation in peacekeeping forces, air support and intelligence, Trump confirmed that these intentions remained in force. He described this as a "security agreement" that is critically important for achieving peace.
Quote: "It's called the security agreement, basically, that they call it. We would help with security because, I think, it's a necessary factor in getting it [achieving peace – ed.] done."
More details: The US president also announced the participation of an American delegation in a meeting on Saturday with representatives of Ukraine, France, Germany and the United Kingdom to discuss his peace plan.
However, Trump stressed that "we will attend the meeting" only if "we think there is a good chance" of reaching a quick agreement and "we don't want to waste a lot of time" unnecessarily.
Background:
- In a recent interview, US President Donald Trump said that it is "time" for Ukraine to hold presidential elections.
- Zelenskyy responded that he is "always ready" for elections, but stressed that this would only be possible if there were a complete ceasefire, which the US would have to negotiate directly with Russia.
- On 11 December Zelenskyy said that, after signals from the US, he had asked members of parliament to draft legislative amendments that would enable elections to be held under martial law.
- Deputy Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament Oleksandr Korniienko said that at present there are no "drafts" or legislative initiatives in parliament regarding holding elections under martial law.
