In a recent interview, US President Donald Trump said that it is "time" for Ukraine to hold presidential elections.
Zelenskyy responded that he is "always ready" for elections but stressed that this would only be possible if there were a complete ceasefire, which the US would have to negotiate directly with Russia.
On 11 December Zelenskyy said that, after signals from the US, he had asked members of parliament to draft legislative amendments that would enable elections to be held under martial law.
Deputy Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament Oleksandr Korniienko said that at present there are no "drafts" or legislative initiatives in parliament regarding holding elections under martial law.
