US President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that a peace agreement with Iran could be signed as early as this weekend in Europe.

Details: According to Trump, Vice President JD Vance would attend the signing ceremony if the agreement is concluded.

The US president also said that Iran's Supreme Leader had agreed to the deal, while noting that it had not yet been fully finalised.

Trump described it as "a very strong memorandum of understanding that is a little conceptual", saying it would restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and include Tehran's commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons.

Speaking at an evening televised rally in support of Georgia Senate candidate Burt Jones, Trump declared: "We ended the war with Iran today."

At another televised campaign event for Alabama Senate candidate Barry Moore, Trump said: "We made a great deal. There'll be no nuclear weapons. People will start coming home very soon. It's pretty much, pretty much completed. We got everything we wanted."

However, the semi-official Iranian news agency Fars reported earlier on Thursday 11 June, citing an unnamed source, that Iranian officials had not yet approved the text of any agreement with the United States.

Background:

  • Earlier, Trump said he had called off planned strikes on Iran, which he had announced just hours before, because the final points of an agreement between the two sides had been approved.
  • Before that, he had stated that US forces would launch a very strong strike against Iran overnight.
  • On Tuesday 9 June, the US president said that a peace agreement with Tehran could be reached within two or three days.
