Travelers try to beat post Labor Day holiday rush at San Diego International Airport
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- San Diego International Airport is preparing for a post-holiday rush, with Monday expected to be its busiest day.
On Sunday evening, the airport wasn't too busy, but an airport spokesperson said it will be a different story come Monday. Some travelers left Sunday night to get ahead of the crowds.
As the holiday weekend came to a close, travelers like Yadira De La Rosa headed out early to avoid Monday’s traffic.
“I have to go to San Jose and see my mom, and I’m very happy.”
De La Rosa was one of many trying to avoid crowded terminals and busy roads.
“I want to avoid the traffic and all the vacations and everything. I really have to be in San Jose today. Look at this, it’s beautiful. It’s empty. This is the perfect day to travel," she said.
Even returning travelers like Xavier Bamberger are planning ahead.
“Tomorrow, I feel like a lot of people, it’s kind of busy, but people are going to get that extra day to come in.”
Bamberger just proposed to his fiancé in Hawaii and said they wanted a smooth trip back home.
San Diego International Airport expects about 75,000 travelers Monday, making it the busiest day of the holiday weekend.
A spokesperson for the airport said about 300,000 travelers traveled through the airport over the holiday weekend.
“For sure, less traffic, fewer people, smaller crowds, and you get the extra day at home,” another traveler added.
Those traveling by car should also prepare to hit pockets of traffic. AAA advises drivers to hit the road before noon to avoid traffic.
