DES PERES, Mo. - Des Peres Department of Public Safety has shared an update regarding the false alarm of shots being reported at West County Mall on Saturday, Sept. 13.

Officials say that incident stemmed from an altercation in the food court, which “caused a great deal of panic” for those who ran for safety.

“A chair was thrown during the altercation and as patrons fled the food court, other chairs and tables were knocked over, causing additional noise, which we believed patrons mistook for gunfire,” the Des Peres Department of Public Safety wrote.

According to the department, the altercation—involving multiple individuals—lasted for only 18 seconds. Law enforcement did not report shots being fired in relation to the incident. A firearm wasn't displayed either, officials say.

Residents, however, have contacted the Des Peres Department of Public Safety about the event, claiming that gunfire did strike one patron.

Police say the victim of the disturbance was found and provided a statement about the altercation but did not press charges against the other individuals, who may later be identified.

For those who have questions/concerns about the incident, officials ask the public to contact the Des Peres Department of Public Safety at 314-835-6235 to speak with Chief Eric Hall.

“As a department we are here to support you and hope you will visit West County Center again soon,” the department concluded.
