Three people injured after crash on I-55 in East St. Louis
ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. - Three people were left injured overnight Tuesday after a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 in East St. Louis.
According to Illinois State Police (ISP), the crash occurred shortly after 1:45 a.m. on southbound I-55 near the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge, involving two vehicles and a semi-truck.
The crash happened after a driver was traveling in the wrong direction on I-55, ISP said. The wrong-way driver was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes before striking a vehicle head-on. The impact of the crash caused one of the vehicles involved to get pushed into a semi-truck on the roadway.
At the scene, a vehicle could be seen underneath the semi-truck. Three people were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment after the crash.
A mile stretch of all lanes on southbound I-55 were shut down for an extended period of time as crews worked to clear the scene.
