The 'Border War' Returns: Kansas vs. Missouri set for long-awaited showdown in Columbia

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - It's been more than a decade since fans last saw it — but one of college football’s most storied rivalries is finally making its long-awaited return.

The “Border War” between the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri is back, and this time, it’s happening in Columbia.

For the first time in 14 years, the Tigers and the Jayhawks will meet in an official football matchup.

Their last clash came on November 25, 2011, when Missouri beat Kansas 24–10 at a packed Arrowhead Stadium — a game that marked the end of an era before Mizzou departed the Big 12 for the SEC in 2012, but now, the rivalry is reborn.

"I can't wait – I have KU friends going, we're going down – we're going to have a tailgate. My parents are going, my brothers in the band," said proud Mizzou alum, Mariah Matson.

Many fans like Matson shared their excitement and plans for the big game-day weekend.

"It's kind of fun to have some of those nostalgic feelings go back and forth, and Monday is going to be hell for somebody you're going to go to work and your team won or your team lost," said Harrison.

Missouri came out on top, and it became the most-watched college football game on TV that season.

While Missouri fans are energized, Kansas supporters aren’t backing down.

Brock Templeman, a 2011 KU graduate, remembers the last meeting all too well — and he’s ready for redemption.

"Pumped – going to win, guarantee – easy win… a Templeman Guarantee."

Carrington Harrison, afternoon host of "The Drive" on 96.5 The Fan, says this is more than just a game — it's community.

"I think it's big for Kansas City – as a city – it's big for the states Missouri and Kansas. It has to be done every year” said another fan.

Harrison is currently working on a documentary titled “Armageddon at Arrowhead,” which looks back at the iconic 2007 game, when both teams were ranked in the top five nationally.

While fans are passionate, Harrison is taking a more measured approach to predicting the outcome.

"I think it's going to be a pretty competitive game – I got the chance to go to KU's first game in the new stadium. I think Jalon Daniels looked like the quarterback of old."

Still, he believes the Tigers may have the upper hand.

"I think the home field advantage for Missouri is going to be a big difference and I just think Missouri has more talent than Kansas,” he said.

Whether you're a die-hard Tiger or a lifelong Jayhawk, one thing is clear: this Saturday’s matchup is more than just a game — it's a revival of history, pride, and passion.

For those looking to dive even deeper into the rivalry, Harrison’s documentary, “Armageddon at Arrowhead,” will premiere at Screenland Armour Theatre on September 24th.
