Sunset Scripps Pier Walk returns to La Jolla

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- People can enjoy sunset walks on the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier in La Jolla starting in September.

Scripps Pier is typically closed to the public. However, starting Saturday, Sept. 20, guests will be invited to take advantage of several opportunities on the iconic landmark as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean.

Activities include scooping plankton, dissecting squid and other hands-on science experiments, all hosted by the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.

The Sunset Scripps Pier Walk experiences are 90 minutes long and give guests rare access to see how the pier helps support researchers in their work.

New this year, the Birch Aquarium will be highlighting the Scripps CO2 program, which measures changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide and its impact on the ocean.

All participants must be at least 9 years old and be able to walk the length of the pier. Guests must meet at the entrance of the pier and are encouraged to dress in layers and comfortable walking shoes.

To participate, tickets for the Sunset Scripps Pier Walks can be booked individually or with aquarium admission for a discounted price. Tickets for the pier walks cost $30 for aquarium members or $40 for non-members. Tickets are $35 for the general public as part of the aquarium bundle.
