Street sweeper 'Archie' tackles clean-up efforts in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS - If you noticed a green 5-foot machine sweeping the streets and bike lanes in St. Louis on Monday, you may have seen "Archie."

According to Mayor Cara Spencer and the city of St. Louis' Street Department, the purpose of this sweeper is to upkeep bike lanes, shared-use paths, pedestrian facilities and other areas that are too small for regular street sweepers, which are about 8 feet wide.

"If you're hitting a rock or hitting glass or getting flat tires, it can be a really big issue," said Spencer, who took a ride in the sweeper Monday morning. "This enables us to clean those bypasses."

Archie—who's named after the famous Gateway Arch—is equipped with a vacuum that can collect litter, dirt and other debris in the city.

As officials begin to understand the machine's capabilities, they plan to use Archie when needed.

Despite this, the city says it plans to use the sweeper in areas such as the Union Boulevard protected bike lane, the 7th Street cycle track, the Tower Grove Connector, the Gateway Mall and walkways on overpasses and bridges.
