Storm system causes thunderstorms, high waves in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A rare October storm is moving through Southern California and San Diego County, bringing heavy rain, high winds and rough seas.

The radar shows San Diego County will get hit with heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms throughout the day and into the evening, with the sun expected to return on Wednesday. A wind advisory was also in place for county valley and coastal areas through 3 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service reports.

Parts of northern San Diego County, including Oceanside, saw strong winds blowing heavy rain earlier Tuesday, which is expected to move through the rest of the region through Tuesday afternoon, decreasing in the late afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service called for possible water spouts and strong winds that had the potential to cause steep waves in the Pacific Ocean off San Diego earlier Tuesday.

Due to the extreme weather conditions, the Maritime Museum of San Diego closed the museum to visitors for the remainder of the day, citing high winds and heavy sea.

NWS has issued a small craft advisory in the Pacific Ocean off San Diego from San Mateo Point to the Mexican Border and out 10 nm, which remains in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday. Boaters should be aware of the risk of thunderstorms and lightning, gusty, erratic winds and choppy seas.
