STL woman killed in crossfire; police seek shooter

ST. LOUIS - Eight days after Tyieshia McDowell, 47, was fatally shot outside a North St. Louis gas station, her family is preparing to lay her to rest.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) continues their search for her killer as the community voices concerns over local violence.

The incident occurred on the night of July 31 at the Conoco gas station located at 5750 Natural Bridge.

Police found McDowell in a vehicle, unconscious and not breathing, with a gunshot wound to the head. She succumbed to her injuries days later.

Residents have expressed their fears about crime in the area, with many choosing to shop outside their neighborhood even before the shooting.

“They can close it if they want to, you know. They could give them another chance whatever but it won’t make me come," said St. Louis resident Charlie Gentry Jr.

McDowell's loved ones are now left planning a funeral they never expected.

The police have stated that the search for McDowell's killer is far from over, indicating ongoing efforts to solve the case.

"Our homicide detectives continue to work all leads in this case. We have determined that the victim was killed in crossfire while attempting to flee the shooting," said Mitch McCoy, director of Public Affairs for SLMPD. "This type of violence is deplorable. It is preventable and we are not going to stop looking for those who pulled the trigger until arrests are made.”

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help cover the funeral expenses; the link can be found here.
