STL man guilty in $200K Kohl's Cash scam

ST. LOUIS - Jurors found a St. Louis man guilty in less than 24 hours after he stole more than $200,000 in merchandise from Kohl’s.

According to court records and testimony at the trial—which began on Monday—35-year-old Marshall Lampkin was the mastermind of a scheme that involved him using Kohl’s cash to purchase over $1,000 worth of items at a Kohl's store.

After those purchases, prosecutors say Lampkin used the Kohl’s Cash to order online merchandise, knowing that the in-person transactions weren’t registered. If items were actually purchased, Lampkin would return them back to the store for a refund in Kohl’s Cash.

Lampkin repeated this process over 100 times, according to court records, and this scheme lasted from 2021 to 2022. About 40 stores in 13 states were targeted in these crimes.

Some of Lampkin’s purchases included furniture, flooring and small appliances. Items were either shipped to a storage unit in St. Louis or to a relative in Illinois, according to testimonies provided at the trial.

Prosecutors believed that Lampkin sold a couple of merchandise items on Facebook through advertisements, but regardless of evidence, jurors only deliberated for seven minutes. Their verdict would find Lampkin guilty on five counts of mail fraud.

He is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
