STL carjackings of rideshare drivers spark safety fears

ST. LOUIS - A teen arrested for carjacking a rideshare driver is now accused of doing the same crime again, officials say.

According to police, both incidents happened in north St. Louis. These latest crimes—involving minors—raise concerns for rideshare drivers and officials.

"These back-to-back crimes highlight the continued challenges our community faces, especially when it comes to violent crime involving juveniles," said Mitch McCoy, director of Public Affairs for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD).

The first carjacking was reported on Aug. 5, in which a 67-year-old Uber driver was carjacked around 11:30 p.m. near Kennerly and Newstead. Police pursued the vehicle until the car ended up with a flat tire near interstate 70 and Lindbergh. Police say the uber driver sustained no injuries, but a gunshot was fired as he ran away.

On Thursday morning, another carjacking near Carter and North Newstead was reported—about a mile from the original crime scene. Police say a 36-year-old Lyft driver was attacked and pulled out of the car.

These carjackings leave Robert Williams, an Uber driver, worried about his safety.

"It's just unfortunate people out here doing people harm while trying to make money for their family," said Williams, who has done the profession for about two years.

Under Missouri law, juvenile courts cannot confirm juvenile charges or custody status. Statute 211.031 shields those records, even in violent cases.

"It's shameful for us who live here in St. Louis; we can't go to the store or stop at a stop sign, it's ridiculous; it's hurting," Rose Neal, a St. Louis resident, said.

FOX 2 reached out to both rideshare companies for a statement about the back-to-back carjackings involving their drivers but has not heard back.

Police say they are working to identify additional suspects who fled from the stolen vehicle. Those who may have any information about these incidents are urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
