St. Louis Sheriff says office upgrades won’t cost taxpayers; FOX 2 tracks dumped furniture
ST. LOUIS – FOX 2 News caught office furniture being dumped outside St. Louis Sheriff Alfred Montgomery’s headquarters at the Clyde S. Cahill Courthouse downtown.
In one instance, it took three sheriff’s office employees to throw out a heavy tabletop.
A sheriff’s office spokesman said they did try to donate many of the items but that organizations were not interested because the furniture is too old.
A look inside the dumpster does show the age of the items. The office spokesman said the sheriff was unable to talk with us about it, but that he is fulfilling a campaign promise to update and modernize his department.
The spokesperson added that he believes the public will like the way this looks and be happy that it came at no cost. He claims that all of the new items have been donated. FOX 2 has asked for the name of the donor, and we’ve also made a Missouri Sunshine request to see if there have been any additional expenses.
Sheriff Montgomery took heat over his budget in June, when we reported his new Chevy Tahoe vehicle purchase, which came along with new golf carts, and new uniforms, patches, and badges.
According to the sheriff’s office, they’re not spending money on this new furniture. FOX 2 also checked with St. Louis City’s budget chairman and the city comptroller, both of whom responded that they’ve heard nothing about this latest upgrade. The sheriff’s office agreed to show us the results when the redecorating is completed.
