St. Louis man sentenced in deadly Christmas Eve shooting

ST. LOUIS - A St. Louis man has been sentenced to decades behind bars in connection with a deadly shooting on Christmas Eve.

On Tuesday, 22-year-old Keon Martez Cannady was sentenced to 25 years in prison over the shooting death of 20-year-old Shawn Kennedy.

Cannady pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon after his trial began.

Investigators say, on Dec. 24, 2023, Kennedy was found shot and unresponsive in the living room of a home in the 900 block of Talmage Avenue, located in the city's Forest Park Southeast neighborhood. He was later pronounced deceased.

Witnesses told police that a gunman fired multiple shots toward the front of the home.

Detectives then obtained surveillance video with audio, showing several people at the residence asking Cannady to leave. The footage captured Cannady pulling out a firearm, firing toward the home and running away from the scene.

At the time of the shooting, Cannady remained on active criminal supervision for a felony conviction for assault with a deadly weapon out of San Diego, California.

“Senseless gun violence continues to take lives and devastate families in our community,” said Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore via a news release. “Our office will continue to pursue justice for victims and aggressively prosecute those who choose to resolve personal conflicts with gun violence.”
