St. Charles issues citywide boil water advisory

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The City of St. Charles has issued a citywide boil water advisory, effective immediately for all residents and businesses as of Thursday afternoon.

The advisory is due to a depressurization event in the city's water distribution system. The advisory is being issued out of an abundance of caution.

A critical water interconnection pipeline, co-owned by the City of St. Charles and the City of St. Peters, was struck and damaged by a private contractor. This incident has caused a significant loss of pressure in the pipeline.

Crews with St. Charles and St. Peters, along with an emergency contractor, have been requested to the site to begin immediate repairs on the damaged pipeline.

During a boil advisory, according to the city, to ensure the safety, all water used for consumption should be brought to a rolling boil for at least three minutes and then allowed to cool before use. This includes water used for:

  • Drinking
  • Making ice
  • Brushing teeth
  • Washing dishes
  • Preparing food

It is not necessary to boil water for other uses, such as showering, bathing, or washing clothes.

In addition to boiling water, the city asks all residents to conserve water until the advisory has been lifted. The city encourages people to refrain from non-essential water usage, such as lawn watering, car washes, and pool fills, as it works to restore the critical pipeline connection.

The boil advisory will remain in effect until officials test the water and confirm it is safe for consumption. The city says results could be available in the next 36-58 hours.

St. Charles city officials will notify the public immediately once the advisory has been lifted. For the latest updates from the city of St. Charles, click here.
