Smoke inhalation incident on USS Harpers Ferry in San Diego leads to hospitalizations

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — More than a dozen units responded to a San Diego shipyard after a fan malfunctioned on a Navy ship, resulting in several personnel being transported to local hospitals for possible smoke inhalation.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department confirmed to FOX 5/KUSI firefighters were assisting Federal Fire firefighters, which serves the CNRSW Metro San Diego Naval, with an incident on a ship in the NASSCO shipyard on East Harbor Drive in Barrio Logan Saturday night.

A NASSCO Representative confirmed Saturday evening in a statement that "there was a build up of smoke due to a fan malfunction near the gym on USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49). Several personnel were affected with mild to moderate smoke inhalation. All have been transported to local hospitals for further assessment. Fedfire, Fire Rescue and NASSCO Fire responded immediately and were able to dispel the smoke."

The first calls went out for a marine fire around 7 p.m. Saturday in the 2700 block of Harbor Drive.

More than a dozen units responded to the scene and ambulances were seen transporting patients.

The NASSCO shipyard is a Master Ship Repair contractor for the U.S. Navy, located along San Diego Bay.
