SLPS kickstarts school year with new changes, policies
ST. LOUIS - From bus routes to school relocations, St. Louis Public Schools' (SLPS) superintendent Millisent Borishade shared with FOX 2 that the first day of class came with challenges, but overall, operations are off to a strong start.
Borishade praised families for getting students ready, and she said that the relocation sites are also thriving. The superintendent noted that over 349 students participated in before-care programs on day one and over 5,000 parents are utilizing Zum's bus-tracking app.
SLPS reports that backup drivers are covering about 100 buses. With the new school year starting Monday, SLPS enforced a no cell phone policy in accordance with Missouri’s Senate Bill 1481.
Borishade said that many schools reported that the policy is going well.
"Many schools instituted collection systems like they had before," Borishade said. "One principal stated that this is their second year having students turn in cell phones during the day. One high school assistant principal said that students turned in their phones without any incident. Another high school had an assembly to share cell phone expectations since cell phone collection was new to them.”
Borishade says the first week's attendance and operations data will be out by week's end.
