Sinkhole at Gordon Moore Park remains a year later

ALTON, Ill. - It's been just over a year since this massive sinkhole was formed at Gordon Moore Park, but wheels are finally turning as the city steps up to resolve the problem.

Security footage from June of 2024 captured the moment a massive sinkhole opened in the middle of a soccer field at Gordon Moore Park in Alton, Illinois, swallowing a light post in seconds.

More than a year later, the hole hasn't been repaired—it's now filled with water and bigger than before.

"Alton's done a great job at maintaining that park, you know. They have a lot of little kid sports, baseball, soccer and football games out there," said Rob Lenhardt, the owner of Mac's Restaurant.

Parents in the area say the sinkhole strikes at the heart of the community.

"At the end of the day, Alton as a whole? This area… downtown, North Alton and West Alton,  doesn't really impact us much. But if you have a little kid, it's a big deal to have a park in your town," Lenhardt said.

Others agree, pointing out how close this sinkhole came to being a tragedy.

"It's good that there was no practices at the time… it was a very scary event," homeowner Brandon Phillips said.

City leaders say they're still trying to figure out next steps. A consultant's report earlier this year tied the collapse to mine subsidence, and a private demand letter was issued to New Frontier Materials, which owns the mine.

But Alton residents remain without answers, no timeline for repairs and no comment from the mayor when FOX 2 reached out.

Meanwhile, that soccer field sits unusable, a growing hole where community members once convened.
