Senior Idol: an annual talent show for senior citizens

SAN DIEGO (FOX5/KUSI) — Senior citizens got to show off their talents on Wednesday in Serving Seniors’ 13th annual “Senior Idol.”

Serving Seniors is a local non-profit with the mission of assisting low-income and homeless senior citizens. The organization helps provide meals, housing, social services and even hosts entertainment like talent shows.

Melinda Forstey, president and CEO of the organization, said that this year’s show featured 10 contestants, all 60 years of age or older.

The competition showcased singers, musicians, writers, dancers, a baton twirler and more.

“This is an event that seniors, staff and volunteers look forward to all year round,” Forstey said.

Contestants were given prizes, applause and bragging rights, however Forstey said the event was more about “bringing people together” and providing a place for local seniors to have a sense of community.

The non-profit serves 1.1 million meals and provides services for over 10,000 seniors a year, making them the largest provider of meals to the elderly in the county, according to their website

Forstey believes events like this help provide entertainment for the senior community and combat feelings of isolation.

The elderly are at higher risk of social isolation and loneliness, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH). The NIH also states that in some cases, social isolation in seniors can lead to high blood pressure, dementia including Alzheimer’s disease and heart disease.

“Social isolation is a huge problem for older adults, that’s why here at Serving Seniors, we’re open 365 days a year,” Forstey said. “We provide a variety of programs and services so people can come down, they can share a meal with their friends.”
