SDG&E shares energy-saving tips for summer heat

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- With a heat wave rolling through the region, San Diego Gas & Electric is sharing energy-saving tips and resources to help residents stay safe, cool and keep utility bills in check during the hottest part of the year.

  • The FOX 5/KUSI video above explains Red Flag Warnings

As local temperatures soar, air conditioners and fans are working overtime, which can mean higher electricity usage and increased costs. SDG&E says small changes in daily habits can go a long way in reducing both energy use and monthly bills.

Here are some energy-saving tips from the utility company:

  • Close blinds and curtains: Blocking direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day can reduce indoor temperatures naturally.
  • Set your thermostat efficiently: Aim for 78°F when home and higher when away. Programmable thermostats make it easier to manage these changes automatically.
  • Use fans effectively: Ceiling and portable fans help circulate air and reduce the need for constant A/C use. Just remember to turn them off when you leave the room.
  • Clean your filters: Regularly check and clean A/C and dryer filters to improve system efficiency and air quality.
  • Cook smart: Use microwaves, toaster ovens, or slow cookers instead of stovetops or ovens — they use less energy and generate less indoor heat.
  • Grill outside: Take the cooking outdoors to avoid heating up the kitchen, and enjoy a break from indoor electronics.

SDG&E is also reminding customers who are having difficulty paying their energy bills that help is available. Residents can call call 1-800-411-7343 to speak with an Energy Service Specialist or visit sdge.com/assistance to explore payment assistance programs and support options.

As the region braces for extreme heat, SDG&E says being proactive with energy use — and reaching out for help when needed — can help keep homes cooler and budgets under control.
