San Diego Zoo wins multiple awards at 2025 AZA conference

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) has received multiple awards from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

AZA recently announced the recipients of its 2025 Honors and Awards at its annual conference held in Tampa, Florida, from Sept. 13-18. The event recognizes the outstanding achievements and impact of facilities in animal care, research, conservation and other areas.

According to the organization, a record 110 applications were submitted across all award categories and 40 were selected.

San Diego Zoo won the Earned Media Excellence Award in the category of facilities with one million guests or more per year for the historic arrival of the giant pandas.

SDZWA also took home the North American Conservation Award for top Southwest Conservation Program, as well as the Volunteer Engagement Award for facility with an operating budget of over $8 million.

Other California zoos that were recognized at the AZA conference included the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, Oakland Zoo, Happy Hollow Park & Zoo in San Jose and Santa Barbara Zoo.
