San Diego task force deployed to combat Pickett fire
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The San Diego Strike Team Task Force is being deployed to help firefighters in northern California fight the Pickett Fire.
The Pickett Fire, which has burned more than 6,000 acres in Napa County, was only 11% contained as of Sunday evening, Cal Fire reports, and firefighters from across the state were being deployed to help battle the wildfire, following the recent mass deployment due to the severe weather and thunderstorms.
San Diego Police confirmed to FOX 5/KUSI Sunday evening the San Diego Strike Team Task Force was deployed to Napa and Sonoma counties to assist with battling the fire.
Cal Fire reported firefighters made good progress Sunday strengthening containment lines and mopping up hot spots. Some evacuation orders were also downgraded, however several evacuation orders and warnings still remained in place as of Sunday evening.
The nearly 2,000 firefighters battling the fire were being flown into the remote and steep and rugged terrain to gain access to the fire, and were receiving help from nearly a dozen firefighting air tankers from throughout the State, according to Cal Fire.
An air quality advisory remains in place, warning of the potential for unhealthy air in parts of Napa, Sonoma and Solano counties through Monday.
Resources were just deployed to San Diego and Los Angeles ahead of Red Flag critical fire weather conditions and monsoons that brought rain and thunderstorms to the region, which is forecast to continue into next week. It follows earlier deployments to Los Angeles, Kern, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Bernardino counties.
