San Diego sheriffs, deputies to wear pink patches for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- San Diego County Sheriff Kelly Martinez has authorized deputies to wear Pink Patches during the month of October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Martinez, a breast cancer survivor herself, stressed the importance of community and awareness.

"The easiest way to get through it is to catch it early," explained Sheriff Martinez. "Go in for those mammograms and treatments."

Joining Sheriff Marinez is Deputy Maggie Collins who is currently battling breast cancer. Deputy Collins was diagnosed a year ago.

"Wearing this patch for our office is very important because it brings up a conversation about breast cancer," said Deputy Collins.

If you see deputy with a pink patch this month, now you know why.
