San Diego residents rally for killed Al Jazeera journalists

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Taking part in a mass mobilization on Tuesday, protesters rallied against Israel’s recent targeted killing of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif.

The rally was organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement organization. Locals gathered in front of The San Diego Union Tribune office to bring attention to demands related to press rights and the ongoing conflict overseas.

According to a press release, the group’s demands include:

  • An end to the blockage on foreign press entry into Gaza
  • An investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the killing of journalists.
  • An arms embargo and halt to all shipments of weapons to Israel.
  • Newsrooms to flood headlines with Gaza's silenced stories.
  • Immediate entry of aid, food, and clean water into Gaza.

Protesters held photos of killed journalists, Palestinian flags and signs that read “Ceasefire Now” and “Send Bread Not Bombs.”

Israeli officials confirmed the targeted airstrikes of al-Sharif, Mohammed Quraiqa and three other members in their media tent, accusing al-Sharif of collaborating with Hamas.

“STRUCK: Hamas terrorist Anas Al-Sharif, who posed as an Al Jazeera journalist,” Israeli Defense Forces posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Al-Sharif was the head of a Hamas terrorist cell and advanced rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and IDF troops.”

“A press badge isn’t a shield for terrorism,” the post continued.

A tracker made by the Associated Press states that the war has been the most dangerous conflict for journalists in recent history, with Israeli forces having killed at least 184 Palestinian journalists, according to AP.

The outlet has cited this data comes from the Committee to Protect Journalists

“We call on all organizations, media sites, press unions, journalists, and supporters of justice worldwide to act now, before Gaza is wiped off the map,” the Palestinian Youth Movement said in a press release. “If the world looks away, Gaza’s annihilation will happen in darkness. We must act now and call on all media organizations to amplify voices from Gaza before it's too late.”
