San Diego Bay Parade of Lights returns for its 55th year with new theme
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- One of San Diego's most beloved holiday traditions, the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, returns this year for its 55th year and with a new theme.
Organizers recently announced that this year's parade theme is "An Out Of This World Christmas," which combines the magic of the holidays with an outer space twist.
This year, spectators can expect "shimmering rocket ships," "glowing alien elves," or even "Santa soaring through space," parade organizers stated. The parade is free to view from various spots located around San Diego Bay.
The Parade of Lights attracts over 100,000 people to the waterfront each December to view dozens of boats adorned with festive lights and decorations.

The parade takes place on two nights -- Dec. 14 and 21 -- and is expected to begin at 5:30 p.m. on both dates, taking boats on a parade route through San Diego Bay.
Boats will launch from Shelter Island, past Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village and Cesar Chavez Park. Then, boats will travel under the Coronado Bridge and finish near the Coronado Ferry Landing.
Spectators are encouraged to arrive at their favorite viewing spot along the parade route early.
Boaters interested in participating in the Parade of Lights can register starting in November. It costs $75 for private boats to enter through Nov. 25 and $100 after that date. For commercial boats, it costs $500 to enter. All vessels are welcome to participate.
Participant information and registration details can be found on the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights website.
