Russians face 17 indictments and 3 convictions for crimes against Ukrainian journalists

Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have brought 17 charges against Russians accused of committing crimes against journalists. Three Russians have already been convicted, and a further 11 indictments have been sent to court.

Details: Semkiv said that since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, Russian forces have killed 58 Ukrainian journalists and nine foreign media workers from France, the United States, Lithuania, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The war has also left 25 Ukrainian and 15 foreign journalists injured.

In addition, 18 Ukrainian media professionals remain imprisoned in Russia, and one journalist is still missing.

In total, Ukrainian authorities have opened 124 criminal proceedings against Russian nationals. The list of suspects includes:

  • The head of detention facility No. 2 in the Russia's city of Taganrog, accused of inflicting "severe physical and psychological suffering, degrading treatment and torture" on late Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna.
  • The deputy head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, charged over the attack on the Sapphire hotel and restaurant in Kramatorsk, in which one journalist was killed and five others injured.
  • Russian servicemen who executed Roman Nezhyborets, a video editor for TV channel Dytynets, during the occupation of the village of Yahidne in Chernihiv Oblast.

Background:

  • In 2024, a Ukrainian court sentenced members of armed formations of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) for abducting, illegally detaining and torturing a Ukrainian journalist at the Kakhovka District Police Department of Kherson Oblast.
  • French reporter Antoni Lallican was killed on 3 October in a Russian FPV drone strike that also injured Kyiv Independent freelance photographer Heorhii Ivanchenko.
