Russia warned European capitals it was planning large-scale strike on Kyiv, Ukraine’s foreign minister says
Russia directly notified European capitals last week that it was supposedly preparing to launch a large-scale strike on Kyiv and advised diplomats to leave the Ukrainian capital.
Source: European Pravda, citing Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha speaking at the Architecture of Security Forum in Kyiv; the information has also been confirmed by Western sources of European Pravda
Details: Opening the forum in Kyiv on 1 June, Sybiha addressed the ambassadors and other representatives of the diplomatic corps in the room and thanked them for staying in Kyiv despite threats from Russia.
He also said Russia's Foreign Ministry had directly approached every European capital to warn them of a planned large-scale strike.
"They warned European capitals and advised them to leave Kyiv. Fortunately, it [the strike] didn't happen," Sybiha said, expressing respect for the partners' decision.
This information was confirmed by diplomats present at the event. Sources told European Pravda that ambassadors accredited to Russia personally visited at least some European foreign ministries last week to deliver the warning Sybiha referred to.
Despite the warning, no European diplomatic mission reduced its presence in Kyiv.
Neither Sybiha nor European Pravda's sources specified the dates of the potential strike, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said late last week that intelligence indicated Russia was preparing for a new large-scale strike on Kyiv.
Background:
- Earlier, several countries publicly reported that they had summoned the Russian ambassadors over Russia's intimidation of diplomats working in Ukraine, but they did not provide details.
- All the European countries stressed that they would not leave Kyiv despite the new threats from Russia.
