Details: Refineries affected by Ukrainian strikes reduced diesel production by up to 1 million tonnes in April and by a further 600,000 tonnes in May, according to Reuters calculations.
Russia's total diesel fuel production stood at 7.5 million tonnes in March.
Meanwhile, Russian fuel exports rose by 8% in April compared with March, reaching 3.25 million tonnes. However, this was below the level recorded in April 2025, when exports totalled 3.3 million tonnes.
Exports have remained stable in May.
Reuters notes that the decline in production could prevent Russia from benefiting from higher oil prices and any easing of US sanctions.
Background:
- Bloomberg reported that Russia is considering restricting exports of diesel and aviation fuel amid a sharp decline in domestic production caused by continued Ukrainian attacks.
- Russia's average oil refining rate in April fell to 4.69 million barrels per day, the lowest level in more than 16 years, since the 2008 financial crisis.
