Romanian president: Drone that struck apartment building was hit by Ukrainian air defence
Romanian President Nicușor Dan has said that the Russian drone which struck an apartment building in the Romanian city of Galați had been hit by Ukrainian air defence, causing it to change course.

Details: Dan said the Russian drone that hit the residential building altered its flight path after apparently being shot down over the Ukrainian city of Reni.
He stressed, however, that responsibility for the incident lies with Russia.
Quote: "When they [the drones – ed.] were flying over Ukrainian territory, some of them were shot down, and one of them, apparently brought down over the city of Reni, changed its trajectory and headed towards Galați."
Details: The president said that Romania will continue discussions with its allies on strengthening its anti-drone capabilities and reiterated that Russia bears responsibility for the incident.
Quote: "At the next NATO meeting, the issue of the equipment Romania needs will be discussed. Russia is undoubtedly responsible for this situation. Romania is engaged in a long-term effort to continue strengthening its defences."
Background:
- Romanian military officials explained that they had been unable to shoot down the drone because of the limited reaction time available and a number of restrictions that apply during peacetime.
- Romania's Foreign Ministry described the incident as a "serious and irresponsible escalation" by Russia and summoned the Russian ambassador.
- Romania believes there are grounds to invoke Article 4 of NATO, which provides for consultations among the Allies, and has asked its partners to redeploy additional anti-drone assets.
