Residents fear more violence after 5 shot in north St. Louis
ST. LOUIS – Homicide detectives with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department have identified the man killed in a shooting at a balloon release Wednesday night as Angelo Davis. He was 18.
Davis was one of five people who were shot around 7 p.m. in the 5900 block of Wells Avenue. A 21-year-old victim is in critical and unstable condition. Three others, ages 20, 30, and 33, are in stable condition as of Thursday afternoon.
Loved ones gathered on Wells Avenue Wednesday night to honor someone who recently died due to gun violence with a balloon release.
"It was like a mafia movie, you would say. You know, a shootout," a witness who did not wish to be identified told FOX 2 News.
The witness described a large amount of gunfire and says there were multiple shooters. SLMPD forensic analysts are still trying to determine how many shooters there were.
"A space that was meant for healing and mourning was shattered by violence. A vigil should be a sacred place to remember a loved one," Mitch McCoy, SLMPD’s Director of Public Affairs, said.
One gun was recovered.
"The one firearm that was recovered was found near the victim that passed away," McCoy said. "However, it is unclear at this point if that firearm had been discharged and that will be part of our forensic review of that gun."
Police are still determining who the shooters were and if the victims were there for the balloon release or if they were there to take part in the violence.
Multiple people who live along Wells Avenue did not want to appear on camera for an interview Thursday, saying they fear that more violence is still coming.
"I don't jnow who it was or whatever, but these young kids don't have no respect for nothing no more," one man said.
SLMPD asks people to come forward by calling Crimestoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS (8477). People can provide tips anonymously.
