Ready, set, skate!: San Diego Ice Arena opens after 6-month closure

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI)--The San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa has reopened after a six-month closure, and young hockey players and figure skaters alike couldn't wait to get back on the ice.

The facility was closed for a much-needed makeover, including the installation of a state-of-the-art vinyl system to ensure the ice is always smooth.

"With the vinyl, we always have clear lines; maybe kids won't be offside as much," quips Angel Lara, SD Ice Arena Customer Lead.

Lara, along with Skating Director Justin Ross, has grown up skating at this facility and considers it a family.

"People come here for life," Ross said. "Such a great time for families, our skate school, our public skate session, and hockey. All walks of life."

The facility offers daily public skate sessions, including a very popular weekend session from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. They also provide a range of programs for kids to learn to play hockey, as well as for older adults, to learn how to skate.

The facility is open seven days a week, with Family Fun Sessions every Saturday and Sunday.
