Putin threatens Armenia with "Ukrainian scenario" over its EU integration aims
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has claimed that Armenia could face a "Ukrainian scenario" due to its European integration aims and vowed to "raze to the ground" any country that attempts to attack Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast.

Details: Commenting on Yerevan's aspirations towards European integration, Putin drew parallels with events in Ukraine.
Quote: "I have already mentioned this. The crisis in Ukraine began with attempts by Ukraine to join the EU. We were not against it back then."
Details: Putin also reacted to a recent statement by Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, who said that in the event of a conflict, NATO would be capable of completely destroying Russian bases in Kaliningrad Oblast. In response, the Russian leader threatened to "raze to the ground those who try to do this".
Background:
- Relations between Moscow and Yerevan have been in a deep crisis for a long time. Armenia has accused Russia of failing to meet its security obligations and has begun a noticeable rapprochement with the West, including effectively freezing its participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO).
- Putin had already issued threats against Armenia during a press conference on 9 May 2026. He demanded that Yerevan hold a referendum to choose between the Eurasian Economic Union and the EU, warning of consequences if it refused to align its foreign policy with the Kremlin.
